Description

Tasting note: Its origins in two sites – heavy clay soil in the Sporen cru plus an unusual mixture of limestone underlain by granite in the Pflostig – might explain the combination of perfume, richness and stony inflections that characterize Hugel’s 2005 Pinot Gris Jubilee. Peach, peach kernel, and chalk dust in the nose lead to a dense, peachy-rich, yet amazingly mineral and faintly bitter palate and a long, yet remarkably firm – even austere – finish with just a trace of warmth. This absolutely requires 2-3 years bottle age but should reward the holder. (The 2001 – having shed any initial tendency in this botrytis-tinged vintage toward heaviness or bitterness – has really blossomed, yet will give immense pleasure for at least another 3-5 years.)
