A magnificent summer, one of the hottest and driest on record. The red wines were initially rich and concentrated with hard tannins and are proving long lived. ***** Michael Broadbent

Chave has always loved the 1983 (a sentiment I share). It seems to me that his 1983 has the potential to be super. Deep dark ruby in color with some amber at the edge, it has a profound concentration of ripe, smoky, berry fruit and Asian spices, full body, exceptional depth and length, as well as a formidable tannin level. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2025.

This was love at first sight. Or was it at the first sniff, swirl or sip? Either way, the beautiful bouquet of earth, cherries, spice and stone was a treat. On the palate, picture, supple, extremely ripe, melted cherries with a beautiful sensation of sweetness, freshness and purity of fruit. A fantastic wine. Beautifully aromatic, with a fresh, spicy personality and a complexity that’s hard to put into words. I was getting notes of tar, earth, herbs, blood and meat. It’s sweet but savoury at the same time. The palate showed spicy red fruits with a subtle medicinal character, as well as tangy citrus notes on the finish. A complex, multifaceted wine with nice definition. 95/100 Jamie Goode

Bought on release at Chicago Wine Company and cellared since then. No import strip and a French tax seal on the capsule -- had me questioning whether this would be a good bottle. No problem at all. Until tonight, I'd not had a wine of the year, but this probably takes it with ease.

(1983 Wine Dinner, Red Tavern, Hong Kong) ~ WOTN. Opened by a great collector at 9 am for a 8pm consumption. By 8pm, nose of perfumed fine black pepper, laced with chocolate and herbs. Most astounding nose. Wine still tastes fresh and well balanced fruit vs alcohol. Finish was distinct if not long. Superb.

Dinner at home with Steve & Barb. Dark ruby in color with a huge and explosive nose of bright cherry & red berry fruit. Very sweet fruit right through to the finish. the tannins have mostly melted in the bottle. Nice acidity on the long finish. Steve & I absolutely love it.
