Lot 49
Grand Constance "Its healing powers on a disappointed heart" - Jane AustenGroot Constancia is South Africa's oldest wine estate, consistently producing wine since 1685. Much of the 1821 vintage was earmarked for Napoleon, while serving out his exile on St Helena. Guarded by 3000 soldiers on a wind-swept Atlantic Island is enough to drive the most pious to drink, so it is not surprising that records suggest that 30 bottles were drunk per month. This was not a case of beggars can't be choosers, as this was and continues to be one of South Africa's finest sweet wines and although he may have had many faults - his taste was outstanding.Having died in 1821 Napoleon never had an opportunity to drink this vintage but instead that privilege is now entrusted to a Dreweatts client. With only a handful of bottles remaining in existence this is an extraordinary opportunity to own this important piece of vinous history.
This important bottle is being sold on behalf of a celebrated London restaurant owner and part of his collection.
