Description

This hugely enjoyable red is made by cult winemaker Gonzalo Gonzalo Grijalba, the 'enfant terrible' of the Rioja region. Having first studied Biology at the University of Leon and then Oenology at the University of Rioja, he proceeded to make biodynamic wines in the hills of Rioja. The 'Grand Cerdo' or 'large pig' is 100% Tempranillo and, true to form, Gonzalo Gonzalo includes no information on the label other than a rant aimed at the bank managers who have refused to lend him money to develop his business. (You really should read the back label!). This red is actually from 4.5 hectares of 35 year-old de-classified Rioja vines, declassified as Gonzalo Gonzalo cropped over the permitted 6 tonnes/hectare. As a result there is no vintage on the label.

A clear cherry red in the glass. On the nose, aromas of red fruits and cassis with earthy notes. On the palate, light and juicy with great acidity with plenty of sweet red fruit flavours. The finish is fresh and medium in length. Great with roasted chicken pieces with pears and raisins, slow cooked roast shoulder of lamb with thyme and juniper berries or a salad of Canteloupe melon, chorizo and artichoke.
