Description

1x bottle in perfect condition of this classic style Rioja. Which is at the top of the quality range of the prestigious CVNE producer.

'Contino is the first and remains one of the greatest single-vineyard Rioja producers in the marketplace. Based on 19th Century French château’s ideals, Contino has been CVNE’s premier label since 1973. Back then, it was rare to grow and produce wines at the same property. In this instance, a 60-odd hectare property outside of Laguardia, in the Rioja Alavesa.

Jesús de Madrazo
This is one of the last wines under the care of winemaker Jesús de Madrazo, the son of CVNE’s former general manager, José Madrazo. Jesus has produced two decades of elegantly sophisticated wine. I’ll miss his wines. That said, his replacement, Jorge Navascués, is an excellent winemaker in his own right.

Wine Review
Aged two years in oak, the Contino is Tempranillo with about 10% Graciano and a tiny addition of Mazuelo and Garnacha. As typical for many Rioja producers, American oak use is prominent, about 50% of the barrel program, the other half French.

Structured into layers of flinty tannins, violets, damson plum, and crushed vanilla emerge on the palate. Burnt sandalwood on the finish and aroma frames red fruit flavors beautifully. There is a distinct and fresh purity here.' Vinology.com

'Contino Vineyards
Drafts of the sixteenth century keep the wines in the best conditions of temperature and humidity. Perhaps for this reason, for the respect and care with which these wines are treated, the Contino is recognized, after 30 years and since its first vintage, the harvest of 1974, as the result of an ideal combination of vineyards, climate, soil and technique. In short, a wine with great personality that triumphs inside and outside our borders.

Viñedos del Contino, advanced technology, deep-rooted tradition

In its drafts, which are among the oldest in La Rioja, you can hear the echoes of a deep-rooted wine tradition and the voices of the most advanced technology.

Cvne has put all its experience at the service of a winery capable of preserving the local rustic flavour in its architecture and looking to the future with innovative facilities where modern wines with great personality are made.

A land and a name, Contino, that breathe history and evoke times of the Catholic Monarchs. They granted the distinction of Contino to the officer of a guard of one hundred soldiers who watched "de contino" for the monarchs and their family. The contino Don Pedro de Samaniego was granted the property of Laserna and the coincidence of these lands with those gives name to the winery.

Climate

Here the summers are dry and hot, of the Mediterranean type, with temperatures that usually exceed 22ºC for some months, and the winters are quite cold, with little rainfall and the possibility of frost. A climate that can be called continental Mediterranean or inland Mediterranean. Taking into account the rains, we speak of continental climate by the frequency and Mediterranean by rainfall, less than 30 mm in the summer months.

Soil

The vineyards grow on a plot of 62 hectares, on alluvial soils. They are sandy-loamy and limestone in the deepest layers, and clay-sandy, with medium and high stony structure (boulder), in the middle and superficial layers. They have high permeability and variable water holding capacity.

Grape varieties

Red: Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Ganacha.

Elaboration

The secret is that it all starts with the delicate work in the vineyard and a winemaking that takes into account the different varieties.

The essence of Contino and the Cvne company in general, since its early days, is viticulture, exquisite care and the work of the vineyard to achieve the maximum expression and quality of its wines. Contino has been able to achieve in its wines freshness, intense aromas and a unique character, internationally appreciated.

Wines

The wines are made exclusively from the vines from the 62 hectares of the San Rafael estate, located in a meander of the Ebro in Laserna, municipality of Laguardia in the wine-growing area of Rioja Alavesa.'
