Description

This six bottle lot comprises a selection of "Right Bank" Bordeaux properties from the powerful 2005 vintage. Being merlot dominant, wines from this part of Bordeaux have matured more quickly than the cabernet dominated grand crus, yet still have ample structure in 2005. The Saint Emilion wines are all from quality grand cru properties (Pomerol wines are not ranked).

These bottles were originally purchased en primeur from WineandCo, France, in 6-packs; so I have been able to follow their evolution. Levels are all good with no signs of ullage. The relative dampness of my cellar has affected the label on L'Arrosee to some extent, and to a degree on the Dassault. The Sanctus has just been unwrapped from its original tissue paper and the label is spotless. The others I would describe as very good.

A few details about the actual properties: L'Arrosee no longer exists, having been incorporated into the excellent Quintus. Such exchanges are not unusual in St Emilion. "Sanctus" is from a designated 3ha portion of La Bienfaisance that is used to produce this superior cuvee in limited quantities. Monbousquet is a well known property having been completely re-structured by Gerard Perse after 1993 to produce wines of concentration from low yields. Chauvin is quite a large well sited property near to Cheval Blanc and the Pomerol border. Dassault is another property which has modernised and was the first to employ the renown consultant Michel Rolland. Lastly, Clos Rene is a 12ha property, apparently unique in having 10% malbec in the blend.

This lot is one of a series of quality wines that I have chosen to offer as being ready to drink with the potential to create enjoyment, quality learning and fascinating comparison. Given the significant structure of these wines I advise that they be given a few hours in the decanter if consumed in the near future.
