Description

Fruit for Imperial Reserva and Imperial Gran Reserva are obtained entirely from CVNE vineyards at Vilalba, in the Rioja Alta region. At almost 600 meters these are amongst the highest vineyards in Rioja. The Microclimate delivers high definition fruit and clear structure, perhaps the most claret-like in style found here. The Reserva benefits from hand-picking and table selection of bunches prior to fermentation, clear quality indicators. The wine is made from 95% Tempranillo and is barrel-matured for 20 months in French and American oak.

85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano y 5% Mazuelo.

WINEMAKING
A selection of the best grapes from our Rioja Alta vineyards around the village of Villalba were hand harvested into small 30 kg boxes. Prior to starting the alcoholic fermentation, the whole bunches of grapes were cooled down and kept at a low temperature for some hours in order to better control the fermentation without using any additives and to achieve the optimum extraction. The fermentation took place in a combination of oak vats and stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. The wine was then aged in both American and French new oak casks for two years before being bottled followed by another two years in bottle prior to its release to the market.

VINTAGE / HARVEST DESCRIPTION
Abundant rainfall and the absence of extreme temperatures during winter allowed the vineyards to keep enough water reserves for an optimum growth. The cycle slowed down some weeks during July and August, but a sunny and dry September favoured a very good phenolic maturation of the grapes. Selective harvest in the vineyards and further hand sorting at the wineries was necessary. Harvest in our vineyards took place from mid-September until early November, with a good quality for young wines in the first weeks and the ideal quality for reservas and above in the last weeks.
